What is a wall sconce?
A sconce is any decorative light fixture mounted to a wall rather than the ceiling. The name dates back to candle holders fixed to castle walls — today it covers everything from minimalist up/down lights to sculptural statement pieces. In Australia the terms “wall sconce” and “wall light” are used interchangeably.
What height should wall sconces be mounted?
As a rule, 150–170 cm from the floor to the centre of the fitting — roughly eye level — so the bulb sits neither in your sightline nor lost above it. For bedside sconces, mount lower: 90–120 cm, or about shoulder height when sitting up in bed.
How far apart should sconces be placed?
Along a hallway or feature wall, space sconces 2.5–3 metres apart for even, welcoming light. Either side of a mirror or bed, position each sconce 90–100 cm apart, centred on the feature between them.
Do wall sconces need an electrician?
Hardwired sconces do — in Australia, 240V wiring is legally licensed work. Plug-in sconce designs need no electrician at all: mount the bracket, plug into a standard outlet, done.
What bulbs suit wall sconces?
Most of our sconces take standard E27, E14 or G9 bulbs. Warm white (2700K) is the go-to for living areas and bedrooms; pair with dimmable bulbs for adjustable ambience.
