The Luncheon of the Boating Party, first exhibited in 1882 at the Seventh Impressionist Exhibition is widely considered as the most acclaimed painting by the renowned French impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir.

The painting captures an idyllic atmosphere as Renoir's friends share food, wine, and conversation on a balcony overlooking the Seine at the Maison Fournaise restaurant in Chatou - the image symbolises the fluidity of French society in the mid- to late 19th century. the Maison Fournaise restaurant in Chatou welcomed patrons of many classes at that time including  businessmen, society women, artists, actresses, writers, critics, seamstresses, and shop girls. Such scenes were unheard of in Paris -  the diversity in the painting symbolised a changing Parisian society - a new, modern society that invited the mixing of classes and diversity.

Renoir painted the scene over many months in 1881 - he would individually paint the figures one by one as they were available.  Nonetheless, Renoir retained the freshness of his vision, even as he revised, rearranged, and crafted an exquisite work of art.

The models in the painting were all friends and family including his future wife  Aline Charigot - she is in the foreground playing with a small dog.

Luncheon of the Boating Party is instantly recognizable and it is symbolic of this period in history and exhibits Impressionism at its very best.
