Fans for Everyday Living

Fans are familiar apparatuses found in many establishments. They facilitate the cooling and ventilation of space by producing substantial airflow within the area. They have various types, composed of different kinds of materials, coated in all sorts of colours and finishes, and contain many high-tech functionalities for a sustainable and practical lifestyle. From simple wind-related devices, their repertoire of attributes has extended to lighting, internet connectivity, and sensing.

Popular Fan Types

Wall Mounted Fans: While ceiling fans push air downwards, wall mounted fans move air around their installed area. Depending on the model, they can be vertically tilted to a corresponding direction and can oscillate up to 180° depending on the model. If you want to save floor space but don’t want to install a ceiling fan, wall mounted fans can be suitable alternatives.

Hugger Fans: These fans are similar to wall mounted fans - only they are mounted flush to ceilings, not walls. Typically, these fans don’t use downrods and are excellent options for small rooms or low-ceiling spaces.

Tower Fans: As fans known for their slim frames and enclosed blades, tower fans are exceptional additions to homes with pets or children. They’re famed for their versatility, with some expensive models even having LED displays, sensors, and remote controllers as premium features.

AC Ceiling Fans: Currently, these fans make up at most 70% of the international ceiling fan market. They’re the most common ceiling fans in residential and commercial spaces. Collectively, AC ceiling fans are cheaper than other fan types. However, they also produce the common loud buzzing noise while in operation.

Pedestal Fans: These fans are the typical standing bladed fans with adjustable necks seen on homes and cafes. They’re more powerful than tower fans and other standing fan types in terms of speed, airflow, power consumption, and added attributes. They’re often built in large frames, making them look cramped when placed in smaller rooms.

Table Fans: Common table fans in the market are smaller versions of pedestal fans. They can be tilted vertically, and some models can even swing in a 360° full circle. They are compact portable fans ideal for localised cooling in a small space.

Floor and Desk Fans: These fans are manufactured to produce enough airflow to cool down a space; hence, their power consumption is a lot lesser than typical fans. As their name suggests, they can be used on floors and desks and can be tilted vertically for the direction of air movement. Typically, desk fans have smaller frames than floor fans, but both fan types often have 3-speed settings.

Smart Fans: These items are regularly connected to the internet servers and are controlled via Amazon Alexa, Apple Homekit, or Google Assistant. Common fan features such as speed, timer, and oscillation direction can be adjusted using smartphone applications.

Mini Ceiling Fans: Having a rotational diameter ranging from 10” to 40”, mini ceiling fans are predominant in tropical regions like Indonesia. They often have synchronous motors and are mostly made of plastic, from their housing to fan blades.

Orbit Ceiling Fans: These fans can oscillate in a full circle, like planets revolving around their orbits. They often have finger guards and are known as cheaper alternatives to traditional paddle-type fans, a kind of fan that has paddle-shaped vanes.

Bladeless Fans: The collective name for fans that uses bladeless turbines to push out air. They are available in both AC and DC motors and were first introduced to the market in 2012.

Pendulum Fans: Also known as flap fans, these products are considered one of the smallest fans marketed internationally for home living. They aim to provide air circulation within a specific targeted area using a back-and-forth motion, hence the name.

DC Ceiling Fans: These fans are quieter and more efficient than standard AC ceiling fans. Their system is more complex, having transformers and other electronic parts integrated with the motor. They produce less heat and often contain the latest fan technologies but are more expensive and prone to damage than most fans.

Common Features Found on Fans

Speed control is one of the most common and important features of all fans. Standard fans anywhere in the world usually have a 3-speed setting, with some expanding up to 7 speeds. The fan speed can be varied via a pull-chain, a wall controller, a remote controller, or the fan’s main body’s buttons. The speed settings and the on and off feature can be directed by motion or voice sensors for high-tech fans.

Some companies manufacture fans with season-related settings. Beyond the equatorial region, fans with reversible summer and winter modes are craved in Australia, Europe, and America. There are also fans that have integrated timer and sleep mode for added versatility. For ceiling fans with fixed or adaptable light kits, attributes such as dimming and colour changing technology are popular add-ons when buying fans.

Fan Blade Materials and Finish

The quality of the fan blade material and its finish affect the overall performance and may prolong the lifetime usage of your chosen fan:

MDF blades, or medium-density fiberboard blades, are generally seen in inexpensive fans and are inappropriate for outdoor settings. This is because MDF blades are made of compacted wood and sawdust elements that may absorb the moisture in the air, warping the shape of the blade.

An excellent alternative for MDF blades is plastic blades - durable, easy to manufacture, and inexpensive, too. They can be moulded into any shape and finished to look like MDF blades. In fact, many fans in our collection have ABS blades, most of which are wet- and tropic-rated fans.

If you like pure and natural, then wooden fan blades are the best for you. They’re primarily used in pricey or premium indoor fans since sourcing the appropriate wood type in forests takes a lot of effort and cost.

Metal blades are the fan blades typically used in industrial and commercial fans. They’re best used for fans in large rooms and outdoor covered spaces. These blades are classified into grades, with marine-grade metal blades being the most suitable for coastal areas.

Shop Fans By Application

One needs to consider the room and the desired main of the fan when buying a new one for your home. For example, fans reserved for bedroom use are usually surrounded by relaxing and cosy vibes. If you need some cooling device that can provide air circulation when working on your office desk, a table, desk, or small fan can do the trick. If you need a fan for your pergola or veranda, find a fan that is damp- or wet-rated for long-lasting use.
