About

One if the most iconic and recognisibale paintings of all time, the Scream by Edward Munch captures the torment of anxiety. Interpret as your own, but for many it the swirling colors and look of desperation perfectly represents the torment and frustration of modern life. It is by far, Edward Munch's most famous work.

  • Four different versions of this painting were made
  • All versions show a figure with an agonized expression against a landscape with a tumultuous orange sky
  • Painted btween between 1893 and 1910
  • The first painting was created using oil, tempera, and pastel on cardboard
  • The second and third were created as pastels
  • The fourth was a tempera painting
  • The various renditions show the artist’s creativity and his interest in experimenting with the possibilities to be obtained across an array of media, while the work’s subject matter fits with Munch’s interest at the time in themes of relationships, life, death, and dread
  • Described as "an icon of modern art, a Mona Lisa for our time."
  • The fourth version (pastel, 1895) was sold for $120 million at Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art auction in 2012 - this was the second highest price paid for a painting at auction
  • Original German name was Der Schrei der Natur, which means "The Scream of Nature"
  • The scene was identified as being the view from a road overlooking Oslo, the Oslofjord and Hovedøya, from the hill of Ekeberg
  • It is rumored that the the strange creature in the foreground of the painting was inspired by a Peruvian mummy, which Munch could have seen at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris
  • Adorn your walls with one of the greatest paintings of all time and redefine your space
  • The first painting (1893) is currently located at the National Gallery, Oslo, Norway
  • In 2004 it was stolen but recovered 2 years later

In his diary in an entry headed, Nice 22 January 1892, Munch described his inspiration for the image:

"One evening I was walking along a path, the city was on one side and the fjord below. I felt tired and ill. I stopped and looked out over the fjord—the sun was setting, and the clouds turning blood red. I sensed a scream passing through nature; it seemed to me that I heard the scream. I painted this picture, painted the clouds as actual blood. The color shrieked. This became The Scream".
